Another Handgun Tragedy in Atlanta...

"NEIGHBOR KILLED, GUEST SHOT IN HOME HANDGUN TRAGEDY

In College Park last night, a party at the apartment of college student Charles Bailey once again proved that a handgun in a home is far more likely to injure acquaintances and friends than strangers.

Police say that two men, including Calvin Lavant, a neighbor, may have joined the party uninvited. During the confusion following their arrival, party guest Prominently Named Shooter may have thought that Lavant had made advances to Shooter's girlfriend.

Shooter grabbed his concealed semiautomatic pistol and opened fire at one of the men, who then ran out of the apartment. Shooter then turned his gun on Lavant, who was in another room with Shooter's girlfriend and other female guests. Lavant jumped out of a window to escape the gunfire. The youth was shot at least once, and died as he tried to return to his nearby home. People nearby said that Levant's last words were pleas for help, and for someone to call the police.

A young woman, also a party guest, was shot several times. She remains hospitali2ed.

Lavant's family and friends were shocked and horrified. A friend told reporters that Lavant would never have gone to the party if he had thought he wasn't wanted, and certainly would have left if he had been asked."

Think the JoCon might run that one, Tam? I only took two Journalism classes.

Bailey said he thought it was the end of his life and the lives of the 10 people inside his apartment for a birthday party after two masked men with guns burst in through a patio door.

“They just came in and separated the men from the women and said, ‘Give me your wallets and cell phones,’” said George Williams of the College Park Police Department.

Bailey said the gunmen started counting bullets. “The other guy asked how many (bullets) he had. He said he had enough,” said Bailey.

Yep, sounds like some good natured youths looking for 'fun' who were 'uninvited'.... good riddance scumbag!

I'm guessing this is Satire?

It is either poor satire or an extreme example of shaping events to fit preconceived notions. Check out the TV news coverage for a better view: http://www.wsbtv.com/news/19365762/detail.html

Another dead criminal, gone straight to hell. This is what happens when people REFUSE to be victims.

I am a little confused reading this. It seems the two people shot were non-shooters: a party-crasher, who seems to be unarmed, and who died, and an apparently unarmed female bystander. It does not say anything about the criminal Shooter being shot. If I am reading this correctly, it seems there is no dead criminal. If so, this is an unusual post on a blog that advocates homeowners owning handguns. What am I missing?

It's a rewrite. Tam pointed out that mass killings that don't happen because armed citi2ens stop them aren't news- no stack of corpses, no agenda validation.

So I rewrote the story, using only information in the genuine story, in such a way that the NYT could publish it.

The anti-self-defense crowd must be just beside themselves. After all, if this had happened in a city that limits a persons right to self-defense, like New York or L.A., then instead of reading what is essentially a back-page story for most newspapers outside of Atlanta, about how only one dirt-bag died at the hands of an armed victim, we would be reading front-page headlines across the nation, about the mass murder of ten innocent college students.

It's also interesting to note that, while it is only fair to count every person who is killed by a gun and every study does count every such person, even in mass murders, every study that counts defensive gun uses, counts each incident as only one use, regardless of how many innocent people may have been protected by that use, as in this case. Seems a little skewed to me.

The author used the wrong title. Should have said "Another handgun VICTORY" but what do u expect from someone who can not even report the truth about what really happened.

The Staghound version of Mr. Lavant's demise seems pretty damn sanitized. All the other accounts I read of this incident say he and his thug partner were committing an armed robbery of a group of students, and their more insidious intentions were prevented by a quick thinking member of the group.
